This seminar will focus on understanding the complex process both preceding and following the so-called Arab Spring. Some of the key themes and questions analyzed in the seminar will include:
 
 - What are the preconditions and precipitants of the massive wave of social and political protests that has been      shaking up the Middle East since December2010?
 
 - What has been the role and the impact of local the "civil society"? What tools have they been employing to  challenge the status quo?
 
 - What has been the role of strategic nonviolence in the region and how should we conceptualize this notion?
 
 - What are the main differences between the different uprisings?
