About the Department of Middle Eastern and African History
The department of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv University is one of the leading departments in its field, worldwide. The Department's instructors and researchers are renowned in the Middle Eastern Studies community for their achievements and research.
Department studies focus upon the history of the peoples of the Middle East since the rise of Islam through the present day, with an emphasis on the modern era (the last 250 years). Courses offered by the Department's lecturers cover the Arab world, Turkey, Iran and North Africa, from various points of view, including: political and diplomatic history; intellectual history; and social, cultural and financial history. Additionally, basic courses on the history of the region during the Middle Ages and the early modern era are offered. In the field of African History, the Department provides its students with courses concerning the history of Africa from the pre-colonial era to the present.
